Geotechnical engineering is one of the engineering disciplines that requires a sound engineering judgement and experience, since the underground soil conditions are often estimated based on few observations and testing. Experience and judgement therefore, play a crucial role in estimating and assessing the site conditions and giving suitable recommendations. SOIL INVESTIGATION


Test pits and/or borehole drillings are performed according to technical specifications and standards, in order to estimate the sub-surface soil profile and groundwater conditions, obtain representative soil samples, carry out necessary field and laboratory tests. Representative samples are collected from the soils encountered in all borings. Undisturbed samples of cohesive soils are extracted using thin walled (Shelby tube). Whereas disturbed samples are extracted from cohesion-less soils and core samples are extracted from rock formations. Samples are taken at every change in soil formation and at intervals of 1.0 m or less. The Standard Penetration Test, SPT are performed in all borings for sandy soils, in accordance with ASTM 1586. The initial and final depth of the water table are reordered.

Our technical reports often include general description of the site, detailed information of the borehole logs, field and laboratory test results, physical and mechanical soil properties, recommendations for the foundations (suitable type of foundation, foundation depth, allowable bearing capacity, modulus of sub-grade reaction, type and quantity of cement) and any necessary precautions to be followed during the excavations of foundations).










LABORATORY & (IN - SITU) TESTS


Laboratory tests are performed on several representative samples for each soil type encountered at boreholes. The preliminary identification of the samples is carried out during drilling, and is revised in the light of the completed test results. Our in-house laboratory is equipped with most of the routine soil physical, mechanical and chemical properties testing. Chemical analysis of soil is carried out to determine total soluble salts, pH, sulfate and chloride contents. Chemical analysis is also carried oud on samples of the ground water (if encountered within the depth of boring).

GEOTECHNICAL ANALYSIS & DESIGN


Soil parameters obtained from geotechnical investigation are utilized in the analysis, in order to predict soil behavior and design foundation elements accordingly. It is crucial therefore to carefully extract and interpret the representative data needed for the design. Calculations and design that require computational analysis are performed using suitable software packages, utilizing appropriate numerical methods.

FORENSIC GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING


Forensic Geotechnical Engineering is gaining much attention as the challenging problems rise and take place. Failures and unpredictable incompetent foundation behavior happen due to several reasons, which can be often undetected or unexplained. The role of forensic geotechnical engineering is to analyze the soil behavior and surrounding environment that lead to the foundation response under investigation (deformation, collapse, failure….etc). Forensic geotechnical engineering helps solving complex issues and settling many challenging disputes. EDECON experts has significant experience in forensic geotechnical engineering, and are capable of tackling challenging problems.
